In the early days of his career, Willy Paul, a young gospel artist from Kenya, was captivated by Diamond’s success and style.

Diamond, already a household name in East Africa, was not only a trendsetter in music but also in fashion, charisma, and branding—a package that Willy Paul aspired to emulate.

At a time when gospel music was Willy Paul’s forte, Diamond Platnumz’s dominance in secular music presented a paradoxical source of inspiration. Willy Paul openly admired Diamond’s music, his stage presence, and his ability to command an audience.

This admiration transcended genres, as Willy Paul infused elements of Diamond’s style into his gospel music, creating a unique blend that resonated with his growing fanbase. His desire to meet Diamond became a dream he couldn’t let go of.

The First Encounter

In an iconic moment arranged by renowned radio personality Mzazi Willy M. Tuva of Mseto East Africa, Willy Paul finally met his idol. He presented Diamond with his song ‘Lala Salama’, hoping for a nod of approval and a potential collaboration. However, the timing was not in his favor. Diamond was laser-focused on breaking into the Nigerian market, and Willy Paul, still in the infancy of his career, lacked the financial muscle and production quality needed to compete on a continental stage.

Though a collaboration didn’t materialize, the meeting planted a seed of determination in Willy Paul.

The Msafi Era

Willy Paul’s admiration for Diamond went beyond music. In 2015, he added the moniker “Msafi” to his name, an homage to Diamond’s record label, Wasafi. He dreamed of being signed by Diamond, but the opportunity never came. Undeterred, Willy Paul channeled this admiration into ambition.

By 2017, he founded his own record label, Saldido International, carving a path to establish himself as a self-made artist.

Collaborations and Connections

Over the years, Willy Paul found himself collaborating with artists from Diamond’s orbit, including Harmonize and Rayvanny. He even worked with Diamond’s rival, Alikiba, demonstrating his versatility and ability to build bridges in the competitive East African music scene.

These collaborations allowed Willy Paul to grow as an artist, broadening his reach and refining his craft.

Growth and Reflection

The passage of time has seen Willy Paul transform from a budding artist into a seasoned performer. While he has not yet achieved his dream of collaborating with Diamond, his career trajectory reflects a maturation that goes beyond music.

Recently, he issued a public apology to fellow Kenyan artist Bahati and his family, a gesture that showcased a new level of emotional intelligence and humility. Such an act might have been unimaginable in his earlier years, when his focus was solely on emulating his idol and proving himself.

Diamond’s Impact

Diamond Platnumz may not have directly shaped Willy Paul’s music, but his influence is undeniable.

From inspiring Willy Paul’s stage name to serving as a benchmark for excellence, Diamond gave Willy Paul a model to aspire to. Even without a collaboration, Diamond’s presence in Willy Paul’s story reflects the power of role models in shaping dreams and ambitions.

A Legacy of His Own

Today, Willy Paul stands as one of Kenya’s most recognizable and dynamic artists.

While his initial obsession with Diamond Platnumz may have faded, the impact of those early days continues to echo in his career.

By turning admiration into motivation, Willy Paul has built a legacy of his own, proving that while dreams of working with idols may not always come true, they can fuel the pursuit of greatness.
