Joseph, who has been a central figure at Universal since joining the U.K. arm in 1998 as general manager of Polydor, expressed his gratitude for his time in the industry.

He rose to become chairman and CEO of Universal Music U.K. and Ireland in 2008, overseeing iconic labels such as EMI, Decca, Island, Polydor, and 0207 Def Jam, as well as the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

Reflecting on his career, Joseph described his journey as a gift. “It has been an honour to work alongside you, creating something truly exceptional, a company that wasn’t only number one but also led with heart and creativity,” he said in his memo. “Now, after 17 years in this role, it’s time to step into something new.”

Joseph’s leadership was pivotal in shaping the U.K. music scene, guiding Universal Music to success while fostering innovation and creativity.

He credited Universal Music chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge for his support throughout the years, noting that his career would not have been possible without Grainge’s belief in him.

In a separate memo, Grainge praised Joseph’s authenticity and dedication. “David guided the U.K. company to heights in a way that was completely authentic to him,” Grainge said. “I have enormous respect for his decision to take an entirely different path after so many outstanding years at UMG.”

Joseph’s departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in U.K. music history, with his influence felt across Universal’s diverse roster of artists and labels.

His legacy, as both an executive and a friend, will continue to inspire the industry. Grainge emphasized that Joseph’s focus was always on making the company a better place for both employees and artists.

As he embarks on a new chapter, studying theology and religion, Joseph leaves behind a legacy of leadership and creativity that has shaped Universal Music U.K. into a global powerhouse. His contributions will be remembered as the company

moves into a new era.
