In a surprising move aimed at keeping the popular social media app TikTok accessible to millions of Americans, President Donald Trump has officially extended the deadline for the app’s parent company, ByteDance, to divest its U.S. operations by an additional 75 days.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! This is the second extension of the order, which was originally issued amid ongoing concerns over national security and data privacy.
The extension provides more time for ByteDance to finalize a deal with American stakeholders and potentially avoid a complete ban in the United States. With over 170 million American users, TikTok’s future has become a hot topic of debate in Washington, with lawmakers citing fears of Chinese government access to U.S. user data.
According to reports, talks are progressing between ByteDance and major U.S. investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, Blackstone, and Oracle.
A proposal dubbed “TikTok America” is currently on the table, which would see TikTok’s U.S. operations run independently, with ByteDance’s ownership reduced to below 20%. Oracle would reportedly manage all U.S. user data to address national security concerns.
However, the situation remains complex. Just days after Trump announced new tariffs on Chinese imports, the Chinese government appeared to slow the approval process for the proposed TikTok sale—potentially as a retaliatory move. The broader U.S.-China trade tensions are now playing a significant role in the outcome of the negotiations.
Despite the hurdles, President Trump has voiced his desire to see TikTok continue operating in the U.S., as long as it’s under secure, American management. The administration maintains that the app must not remain under Chinese control due to potential security vulnerabilities.
With the clock now reset, all eyes will be on the negotiations in the coming weeks. The future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain, but for now, the app is safe—at least until the new deadline.
