In a new report from Duetti, it’s clear that when it comes to per-stream royalties, Amazon Music and Apple Music are far outpacing Spotify.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!According to Duetti’s second-annual Music Economics Report, indie artists are receiving a much higher payout on these platforms, with Amazon Music paying $8.80 per 1,000 streams and Apple Music offering $6.20, compared to Spotify’s much lower $3.00.
This news is particularly significant as Spotify’s approach to royalties has changed over time. The platform now requires tracks to hit 1,000 annual streams before even qualifying for a payout.
Add to that Spotify’s controversial “Discovery Mode,” which allows artists to promote their music for reduced royalties, and it’s no surprise that per-stream payouts for indie artists are feeling the squeeze.
Despite this, Spotify remains the dominant player in terms of total payouts, but that doesn’t negate the fact that indie artists are often earning far less per stream.
The shift in streaming dynamics, combined with price increases and growing competition from platforms like YouTube, Tidal, and SoundCloud, leaves artists with some tough decisions to make.
As the streaming world continues to evolve, it’s clear that the battle for indie artist loyalty is far from over. With AI-driven content flooding platforms and on-demand play volumes climbing, the future of music royalties will be one to watch closely.
