Saboti Chief Protus Wechuli, a beloved figure in his community known for his jovial nature, had the experience of a lifetime when he visited Kenya’s National Assembly. This memorable visit was made possible by an invitation from Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi, who wanted to recognize the chief’s dedication to public service and give him a firsthand look at the workings of the country’s legislature.

Chief Wechuli, who has long been a popular and approachable leader in Saboti, was visibly excited as he stepped into Parliament buildings for the first time. Clad in his official uniform, his trademark broad smile was hard to miss as he marveled at the grandeur and history surrounding the National Assembly. For a man who has spent years working at the grassroots level, resolving disputes, and attending to the needs of his constituents, the visit represented a rare opportunity to witness how national laws are crafted and debated.

“I never imagined that I would one day find myself standing inside the very halls where decisions that shape our country are made,” said Chief Wechuli. “It is an honor, and I am deeply grateful to our MP Caleb Amisi for extending this invitation to me.”

During his visit, the chief was given a comprehensive tour of the National Assembly, from the Chambers where Members of Parliament debate and pass legislation to the offices where much of the behind-the-scenes work takes place. He also had the chance to sit in on a parliamentary session, observing how MPs engage in debates and contribute to the shaping of policies that affect every Kenyan.

MP Caleb Amisi, who has often spoken highly of Chief Wechuli’s leadership and dedication to serving the people of Saboti, explained that the invitation was a gesture of appreciation for the chief’s tireless work. “Chief Wechuli is a remarkable leader at the grassroots level,” Amisi noted. “His commitment to improving the lives of people in Saboti is exemplary, and I wanted him to see how his work is connected to the bigger picture of governance in our country.”

The experience was both enlightening and inspiring for Chief Wechuli. Having worked for many years as a chief, he is used to addressing the needs of his community in a very hands-on way, dealing with issues such as security, land disputes, and social welfare. But visiting the National Assembly opened his eyes to how the policies and laws passed by Parliament directly influence his work on the ground.

“I now have a better understanding of how what happens here in Nairobi affects what we do in the villages,” he reflected. “It makes me appreciate the responsibility our MPs have, and I’m even more committed to playing my part at the local level.”

The chief’s visit also symbolized the strong connection between grassroots leadership and national governance. As someone who interacts daily with ordinary Kenyans, Chief Wechuli’s insights and experiences are invaluable to policymakers. MP Amisi hopes that more local leaders like Wechuli can be given opportunities to visit and engage with the National Assembly in the future.

For now, Chief Wechuli returns to Saboti with renewed energy and a deeper sense of purpose, eager to continue his work with an even greater understanding of the broader legislative process. His infectious enthusiasm and optimism will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, not only on his community but also on those he met during his visit to Parliament.

“I’m excited to share this experience with the people of Saboti,” he said with his characteristic cheer. “It’s not every day that a chief gets to visit Parliament, but now that I have, I want to encourage others to see that an

ything is possible.”
