“I had written 9 songs that were rejected.”
Zane leaned in, intrigued. “What happened after that?”
“It was only until you were out of ideas,” Pharrell continued, “and you asked yourself a rhetorical question. ‘How do you make a song about a person that’s so happy that nothing can bring them down?'”
Zane’s eyebrows rose. “And what was your answer?”
Pharrell chuckled softly, shaking his head at the memory. “I sarcastically answered it and put music to it, and that sarcasm became the song.”
Zane smiled, realizing how such a light, infectious tune could come from such an unexpected place.
“And that’s what broke me,” Pharrell said, as though still in disbelief. “That sarcastic little answer became one of the most joyful songs of my career.”
